A Broken Wrist But No Broken Heart!
My son was playing on a swing set, just like he always did during recess, when he slipped from the swing and fell onto his hands. I happened to be there volunteering at the school when it happened but couldn’t catch him in time. He started crying at the top of his lungs and clutching at his right wrist. When I saw how it had swollen, I knew that he had broken something in there. The school offered to call an ambulance but I know from past experience how expensive a ride to the hospital in one of those things can be. I got my son into my pickup and we headed over to the hospital. The ER doctor told us that his wrist was broken badly and that he would have to see a wrist surgeon from Hand Surgery LA within the hour. The wrist surgeon got the ball rolling on wrist surgery and within two hours my son was in a cast. The first person to sign it was the surgeon, who also gave my son some candy and a sticker.
Back at school my son was much more careful about riding the swing set and we spent a lot of time talking to the other students about swing set safety. I was also concerned about my son’s long term health so we sought out a carpal tunnel syndrome specialist and a dietitian and analyzed his nutrient intake. Apparently he had not been getting enough calcium, which caused his wrist to break so badly. I was frustrated by this but made sure to follow the dietitian’s advice to the letter. We were told that when a young person experiences a bad break of one of their bones, the bone generally becomes stronger than its corresponding bone in the other limb. The calcium uptake sure helped my son’s wrist.
